JK-Kindergarten

Our youngest students learn both by example and exploration.

Students in the Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes have a structured day of learning. They build basic knowledge with songs, chants, rhymes, stories and play. They enjoy outdoor play twice a day.

The students in JK and Kindergarten have lessons in phonics, reading, penmanship, math, Bible, and science. Arts and crafts as well as music are used to teach many of these subjects.

The Kindergarten and JK teachers use a proven phonics program that was developed by Rosemary Sweet Thoburn, the mother of our founder Robert Thoburn. Many of the four year olds learn to read and most of the five year olds learn to read on a third grade reading level by the end of the year.

Mrs. Weathers, the Kindergarten teacher, has taught at Oak Hill since 2004. Mrs. Key, the Junior Kindergarten teacher, began teaching at Oak Hill in 2005. Both inspire a love for learning in their students.
